Webventure Artist Statement

For this statement I wanted to create an immersive, decision-based adventure playing with the concept of choice. The viewer first wakes up in a daze and has to choose between exploring a cave or a cabin. From there, the viewer has multiple paths they can follow, many that lead to death and only one that wins.

I was inspired by old adventure games, such as Zork. Zork is a decision based adventure game but uses typing instead of multiple choice options, allowing the viewer freedom in what they choose and leaving room for exploration of what commands work and do not work.

Overall I was not a fan of this project. Though I enjoyed creating my own world and decision paths, I was not challenged artistically. I also enjoyed the concept of creating a game and wish we used a different program, such as Scratch. I used Scratch when I was a kid and loved it and was successful in creating a fun game. Scratch allows you to use your keyboard to play the game and move around, while the game creator can use code blocks to create levels, actions, and characters.

I found creating an adventure game on Wix to be limiting in the fact the viewer can only point and click. Nonetheless, I was proud of the atmosphere I created. I believe I elicited suspense , horror, and mystery through my imagery and text hints.
