For this project I sought out to create a morbid, vivid juxtaposition of the raging climate crisis and a reminiscent yearning for “normal” life, or freedom from harmful carbon emissions and their devastating effects. I was inspired by recent wildfire scenes from the Western United States, particularly the vivid red skies and raging flames. These images provoke feelings of impending doom directly through the real destruction of the earth and indirectly thru the symbolism of anger, rage, and evil represented by the color red. I decided to represent the nostalgic yearning for the past with old home movie footage. Together, the videos and FX merged to create a cohesive story that represents our current reality. Soon, many parts of the Earth will be uninhabitably warm as temperatures continue to rise, ice caps melt, and storms and fires rage. The climate crisis is also a communication crisis. As misinformation plagues social media and cable TV we lose sight of how urgent and irreversible the damage is everyday. We must be direct and constant in our fight for climate justice.
